In the ancient classical yogic texts, known as the Yoga Sutras, physical yoga postures or poses are not even mentioned. Sage Patanjali, known as the father of yoga, spoke of asana as the practice of staying seated in one’s true self, meaning to not move away in our awareness from who we truly are. Asana literally means seat or to sit down. The highest form of yoga according to the enlightened Seers or Rishis, is to live fully in this world while remaining established or firmly seated in one’s own true nature of Sat-Chit-Ananda - our truth, our existence as bliss consciousness.
My art is inspired by this dance we all experience between our inner world and outer world - our soul's deepest and innermost whispered callings for stillness and silence, and life's outward, noisy, everyday to do's, responsibilities, and distractions.
Do you remember the saying? – "Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water."
It's so true, isn't it? No matter how Self realized we are, the laundry still needs to be done and the dinner prepared. It's a balancing act to live with one foot in the physical world and the other foot in an entirely other realm, and to celebrate and honor both because they're two sides of the same precious coin.
Art is a powerful healer of our inner and outer spaces. It uplifts our spirit and touches our soul. It brings joy and beauty to our homes and surroundings. It speaks volumes that words can never ever express.
I would love to hear about your experiences living with the art you love, and the ways you bring balance to your inner self and outer self and how it extends into the place or places you call home.
